Meet Makayla Key, 2020 Dudley Graduate, Morehead-Cain Scholar, Jack Kent Cooke College Scholar & 2020 Say Yes Guilford Intern

Makayla Key exudes enthusiasm. You hear it when she talks about her love for her hometown, “There’s everything from arts to sports; I think it’s the perfect mix between a big city and a small town. I have absolutely loved every moment in Greensboro,” she gushes. You see it in her high school accomplishments: Dudley golf team member, basketball manager, founder of the Gender and Sexuality Alliance, Girl Scout and valedictorian to name just a few. And you feel her excitement when she talks about attending UNC-Chapel Hill as a Morehead-Cain Scholar.

Key applied that same passion to her college search, laying out a detailed plan from college exploration to acceptance. It got the attention of her classmates. “This year everyone in my class would come to me if they needed help with college admissions. I have been tossing around the idea of possibly becoming a college counselor.”

Her mom encouraged Makayla to use this summer before school to explore that interest, so she reached out to Say Yes Guilford. She joined the team as an intern in June and has been helping plan student services for the fall including webinars, social media take-overs, and a college-planning checklist for high schoolers.

“GCS has so many partnerships with organizations that help provide students with the right resources, so I can think of no better place to get an education and also have the right networks to get you where you need to go in life.”
