MARCH 30, 2022 – Say Yes Guilford is pleased to announce an expansion of a nationally recognized tutoring program in Guilford County Schools beginning in Fall 2022.

Say Yes Guilford implemented the HELPS Tutoring Program (Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies) in two GCS schools in the fall of 2019. With 100% of participating students showing growth on reading assessments, and the pandemic keeping children from the classroom, SYG expanded the tutoring program virtually in 2020 to include HELPS and general subject tutoring.
Today SYG is serving 150 students with HELPS tutoring and nearly 90 more with general subject tutoring.
Thanks to a federal grant, GCS will receive $2 million to support the district’s tutoring initiative including a further expansion of SYG’s HELPS Tutoring into GCS elementary schools.
Say Yes Guilford Chief Impact Officer Amanda Rosemann says this additional support will help accelerate learning in Guilford County Schools. “The pandemic’s effect on learning is wide-reaching and will take years to remedy. Supports must be equally broad, so that COVID does not define our students’ futures.”

Students of the Schools of Education at North Carolina A&T and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro will be among the tutors working one-on-one with GCS students as part of the grant.

Since its inception in 2015, Say Yes Guilford has partnered with GCS to provide thousands of hours of tutoring, college prep and financial aid workshops, and career counseling to students. Thanks to generous community support SYG has awarded more than $11.4 million to GCS graduates, and our partnership with more than 100 private colleges and universities provided another $25.4 million for a total scholarship impact of more than $36.5 million.

Say Yes Guilford is committed to providing access to support services and scholarships designed to prepare Guilford County Schools’ students for success in college, career and life.

Say Yes Guilford scholarship registration is open for GCS seniors through June 1, 2022.
