High school is a chance for a lot of students to reset and recommit to their goals. For Mei Luu, it was also a chance to take advantage of some extra support. “I feel that SEO Scholars, it brings back that nostalgia of people helping me with my work instead of trying to do it all on my own,” she says.

The Smith High School freshman lives with her dad and two siblings. “We always reconnect with each other, and we built a really great bond with each other.” They help each other through school and life.

“I want to become a psychiatrist,” Luu says thinking about some of the support she’s received in her life. “I really love talking and sharing with people that it’s going to be alright and giving them tips on how to be a better person.”

Luu hopes shift_ed SEO Scholars will help her accomplish her dream of attending Harvard, a step on her way to her career goals. “It would be the best thing I ever accomplished in my life.”

SEO Scholars’ national expansion begins in Guilford County through a partnership with shift_ed. This  pilot hybrid program will create a pipeline for Guilford County Schools students to attend top colleges and build careers that will drive familial prosperity and community-wide economic development. Through established partnerships with local educators, other nonprofit organizations and the regional business community, shift_ed is positioned to set the standard for how the SEO Scholars program can work in mid-sized cities. This partnership will create a pipeline of educated, motivated young adults to fill critical roles in Guilford County’s workforce.

 For more than 50 years, SEO has been transforming public high school students into college graduates in New York and San Francisco. This free, eight-year academic program has eliminated the achievement gap on standardized tests for students and boasts a 90 percent college graduation rate.
