Jakki Davis beams when she talks about the new garden at D-Up in High Point. “They will learn to garden, tend and also to harvest. They’ll get to take it home to share with their families.”

The garden is the latest in healthy living initiatives for the children who attend after-school programs here. “D-Up is a non profit organization that my husband and I started in 2007,” she says. “We provide education, health and life readiness for youth and also their families to maximize their life experiences and also for them to reach self-sufficency.”

Davis depends of community support to grow her program. “Being a small non profit, we have to lean on the efforts of a lot of people to make it,” she explains.

“We’re working with growing high point, second harvest food bank and of course Say Yes to get volunteers to come help, so it’s not the efforts of one, I can tell you that.”
